School Toilet Provisions
The design of school washrooms should provide students with a safe, hygienic, accessible and secure environment. Students should feel comfortable using washroom facilities, rather than avoiding these spaces which unfortunately can be quite common.
This can be for several reasons such as:
- Toilets and washrooms are unsupervised places which can make students anxious.
- Lack of supervision can also mean pupils feel more vulnerable against bullies or anti-social behaviour.
- If not well kept, toilets and washrooms can become unhygienic and unsafe spaces, leading to students avoiding using these facilities. This could include loose locks, broken doors, broken toilet seats, no toilet roll or soap etc.
- If toilets are not accessible or wheelchair-friendly, students with disabilities cannot/may not feel comfortable enough to use the toilet facilities available. This can lead to feelings of alienation, and embarrassment by reinforcing their feelings of being ‘different’ from their peers. No/lack of correct facilities can deprive them of basic needs and dignity.
- Schools require a washroom that is not only functional and accessible to all students but aesthetically pleasing too, in keeping with the style of the school.
You can find out more regarding school toilet provisions and the Department of Education’s School Cubicle Standards in our article, Adhering to the Toilet Provision in Schools: Regulations and Tips.
Our Safety & Privacy Features
We offer a range of washroom features that ensure safety, privacy and access in the case of an emergency while also maintaining a sleek washroom design suitable for school and nursery environments.
Floor-To-Ceiling System
Privacy is a crucial factor to consider when designing a washroom for students and young children. Many schools require washrooms that can be designed with ‘anti-bullying’ in mind.
Our floor-to-ceiling cubicle systems offer a great solution to this requirement by providing complete privacy for students and a secure locking system.
We have also designed many school washrooms as open spaces, to ensure a safe and friendly environment for students. You can see how we have achieved this in the washroom we designed for Jubilee Wood Primary School.
Anti-Peep Channel
Anti-peep channel is available at additional cost to reduce any opportunity for camera access.
Emergency Access
Access in the event of emergency is a critical factor; all of Excelsiors ranges are complete with ‘Engaged’ & ‘Occupied’ indicators that can be opened in the event of emergency enabling the doors to be removed with lift off hinges.
