FAQ:

How to Maximise the Lifespan & Performance of Panelling Systems

Panelling systems are a long-term investment in both the performance and appearance. When correctly specified, installed and maintained, a high-quality panelling system can deliver decades of reliable service - reducing whole-life costs, minimising disruption and maintaining compliance in demanding environments. Below, Excelsior Panelling Systems answer some frequently asked questions on maximising the lifespan and performance of panelling systems.

What factors influence the lifespan of a panelling system?

The longevity of a panelling system is influenced by a combination of material selection, environmental conditions, installation quality and ongoing maintenance.

Factors that Excelsior have seen influence the lifespan of a panelling system include:

  • High traffic / heavy usage
  • Fluctuating room temperatures
  • Moisture exposure
  • Cleaning regimes (frequency + chemicals)
  • Quality of installation
  • Compatibility of fixings and substrates

Selecting systems designed for the intended environment—supported by durable finishes and appropriate fixing methods—helps specifiers and facilities teams significantly reduce the risk of premature damage.

At Excelsior, panelling systems are engineered with whole-life performance in mind, ensuring that materials, fixings and finishes work together as an integrated system rather than as isolated components.

Which panelling systems perform best in high-traffic areas?

In environments such as education, healthcare and commercial buildings, panelling systems are frequently exposed to impact, abrasion and cleaning regimes.

Impact resistance, edge durability and vandal resistance are also key considerations in high-traffic environments. Robust core materials and well-protected edges help prevent chipping, cracking and surface damage, maintaining performance and appearance under intensive use.

When considering panelling choices for high-traffic environments, it is important to consider the core material being used. One of the most popular materials used in cubicle ranges is Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) due to its high durability, making it a great choice in high-traffic environments.

Alongside SGL, other material options, such as HPL, may be suitable depending on budget, aesthetic requirements and exposure levels, provided they are correctly specified for the environment.

How Does Maintenance Extend the Lifespan of Panelling Systems?

Routine maintenance is essential to ensuring panelling systems continue to perform as intended. This includes using appropriate cleaning methods, inspecting fixings and addressing minor damage before it escalates.

Planned inspection and preventative maintenance can significantly reduce reactive repairs, helping facilities teams maintain consistent standards while controlling long-term costs.

At Excelsior, we provide comprehensive Care and Maintenance guidance for all our ironmongery, panelling, and solid surface products, helping to ensure long-term performance and support an extended product lifespan.

How do finishes impact durability and long-term performance?

The choice of finish can have a significant impact on resistance to wear, moisture and cleaning chemicals. Inappropriate finishes may deteriorate quickly, particularly in environments requiring frequent cleaning or enhanced hygiene standards.

Excelsior works closely with leading laminate manufacturers to ensure consistently high material quality, offering panelling systems with finishes carefully selected to balance aesthetic appeal with durability. When paired with suitable secondary products, these finishes help maintain reliable performance throughout their lifecycle, even under intensive use.

When should a panelling system be reviewed or replaced?

Signs such as repeated surface damage, loose panels or difficulty maintaining appearance may indicate that a system requires review. However, many issues can be resolved through targeted upgrades or the integration of additional secondary products rather than full replacement.

At Excelsior, we manufacture cubicle solutions that are 100% bespoke to the project. This means that we can supply replacements on our own projects, as well as being able to create a ‘best fit’ match to any project that needs some TLC.

Targeted upgrades and component replacement can also support more sustainable outcomes by reducing waste and avoiding unnecessary full system replacement.

We work with clients to evaluate existing installations and recommend solutions that extend service life wherever possible.

How important is correct installation for panelling systems?

Correct installation is critical to the long-term performance and durability of a panelling system. Even the highest-quality materials can underperform or deteriorate prematurely if installed incorrectly.
Key considerations include accurate setting out, appropriate fixing methods, allowance for material movement and alignment with the surrounding structure.

Poor installation can lead to issues such as panel movement, stress cracking, moisture ingress or premature wear at joints and edges. At Excelsior, our technical guidance supports installers and project teams in achieving consistent, high-quality installation outcomes that help maximise product lifespan and performance.

Key Takeaways:

  • Correct specification, installation and maintenance are essential to maximising panelling system lifespan.
  • Materials, finishes and fixings should be selected as part of an integrated system, tailored to the environment.
  • Targeted maintenance and component replacement can often extend service life without full system replacement.

Maximising the lifespan and performance of panelling systems requires a holistic approach that considers design, installation and long-term use. By treating panelling as an integrated system—supported by carefully selected secondary products—project teams can achieve more durable, compliant and cost-effective outcomes.

FAQs

What toilet cubicles are the cheapest?

All of Excelsior's washroom installations are bespoke and created to meet our customers needs. Therefore, we do not have a 'price' as such for each range, but a price point at which to start bespoke measurements and requirements.

Typically, the price points of the toilet cubicle materials begin with Solid Grade Laminate as the most expensive, and Melamine Faced Chipboard as the least expensive. This may vary project-to-project based on specifications.
