Solid Grade Laminate (SGL)

Excelsior range

Impervious to water penetration and extremely resistant to impact.

Ideal for use in the harshest of environments such as schools and leisure centres.

Excelsior’s Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) is one of the best materials for toilet and shower cubicles. Crafted from high-quality paper layers and reinforced with resins, SGL provides a highly durable, water and vandal-resistant solution.

SGL is suitable for integration into many of our washroom cubicle ranges required in wet environments, such as leisure centres and sports clubs.

Our solid-grade laminate cubicles and panels are impervious to water penetration and extremely impact-resistant.

SGL is a great choice for environments with high amounts of traffic, such as service stations, leisure centres or school toilets. Its wipe-clean quality also makes it a sensible choice for an environment prone to vandalism such as public toilets.

Excelsior is a highly established cubicle manufacturer, providing tailored washroom solutions. We work closely with architects to actualise designs, supplying and installing quality washroom cubicles and IPS duct panelling, plus vanity units, wash troughs, changing areas, and more.

What is SGL?

Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) is a durable, high-pressure material made by fusing layers of high-quality paper with thermosetting resin under intense heat and pressure. This process turns the resin into a tough, binding plastic and compresses the paper into a solid, water-resistant sheet, resulting in a robust and long-lasting material.

Advantages & Disadvantages of SGL

Solid-grade laminate has a primary advantage over other materials like melamine-faced chipboard (MFC) and high-pressure laminate (HPL) due to its waterproof quality.

MFC is resistant to water but not completely waterproof. Therefore, it is not suitable for environments such as swimming pools and leisure centres. HPL is a great choice for toilet cubicles with many similarities to SGL. However, SGL is a denser, self-supporting panel which offers the highest level of performance.

The Advantages of SGL

  • Excellent durability
  • Weather resistance
  • Water resistance
  • Resistant to vandalism
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Wide variety of applications

The Disadvantages of SGL

  • More expensive due to SGL’s premium nature
  • Installation complexity - due to its thickness and density, SGL can be more challenging to install in comparison to lighter materials.

SGL Typical Layout Panel Dimensions

Excelsior works directly with architects to create and manufacture bespoke washrooms. As a part of this, we utilise BIM (Building Information Modelling) to bring designs to life.

BIM enables clients to digitally ‘walk through’ the washroom before design approval and manufacturing processes. This has several advantages.

BIM helps clients visualise the washroom layout and appearance; this stimulates design ideas while enhancing productivity by reducing waste and saving time during initial consultative stages.
